Different types of home health care services
HOME HEALTH
Home health refers to medical or skilled services provided by a registered nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, or medical social worker. Home health covers a wide range of medical services depending on the patient’s needs, including: medication management, monitoring vital signs, wound care, rehabilitative therapies, and long term resource and life planning with a medical social worker. Home health must be prescribed by a physician.
HOME CARE
Non-medical home care is broken down into two different categories: personal care and companion care. Companion care includes preparing meals, running errands, light housekeeping, and any other service not directly involved in touching a patient. Personal care allows physical contact between patient and caregiver but only to assist with activities of daily living like dressing, feeding, and bathing. Both personal care and companion care help seniors with basic activities of daily living. Home care does not need to be prescribed by a doctor. Home care is not covered by your medical insurance, but can be covered by a long term care insurance policy, or Veterans Association Benefits.
