The terms home care and home health are often confused by the general public.  What is the difference between the two, and which services does each provide? At Premier Home Care, we are honored to provide both home care and home health services to seniors throughout greater Philadelphia.

Our goal is to help your elderly loved one restore health, confidence, and independence back in their life. We accomplish this by emphasizing compassion, organization, and communication throughout the entire care process, from assessment to treatment. Below is an in-depth look at the overall home health care picture, giving you a better idea of the nuances of each type of care.

Different types of home health care services

Home health refers to medical or skilled services provided by a registered nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, or medical social worker. Home health covers a wide range of medical services depending on the patient’s needs, including: medication management, monitoring vital signs, wound care, rehabilitative therapies, and long term resource and life planning with a medical social worker. Home health must be prescribed by a physician.

Non-medical home care is broken down into two different categories: personal care and companion care.  Companion care includes preparing meals, running errands, light housekeeping, and any other service not directly involved in touching a patient. Personal care allows physical contact between patient and caregiver but only to assist with activities of daily living like dressing, feeding, and bathing. Both personal care and companion care help seniors with basic activities of daily living. Home care does not need to be prescribed by a doctor. Home care is not covered by your medical insurance, but can be covered by a long term care insurance policy, or Veterans Association Benefits.

Many seniors struggle with activities of daily living. Some may choose to relocate to a senior living community or skilled nursing facility. This type of move can be very costly and upsetting to a senior. Premier Home Care provides a solution! Our comprehensive care model of home health and home care services provides a wide range of care. Allowing the senior to stay in the comfort of their own home while receiving nursing and therapy, assistance with bathing, or even light housekeeping, or help with shopping and errands. We do it ALL!

Many medical conditions such as recent injury, surgery, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, respiratory disease, arthritis, among others, can become unmanageable, thereby requiring ongoing assistance. Such conditions often require the caregiver to intimately know the patient, analyze and adjust accordingly. Working with a company like Premier Home Care gives you access to all the care you need.

Premier Home Care prides itself on being adept in finding the perfect caregiver for you or a loved one. In addition, because of Premier’s strong home health and skilled home care background, we are also able to provide skilled and licensed clinicians, with a doctor’s order, at a moment’s notice if needed. We offer you complete peace of mind, knowing that your health and safety are our priority! Whatever the services that you require may be, whether skilled, non-skilled or both, we are able to meet those needs for you.

In the event of a recent illness, injury, surgery or hospitalization requiring home health care, patients DO NOT need to pay for the services of a RN, PT, OT, ST, HHA or MSW. These services are covered under Medicare and there is NO out of pocket cost or co-pay. A doctor’s order is required to initiate home health services.

How To Pay For Home Care services?

Deciding that you or your elderly loved one requires assistance at home is a difficult choice.  Now the question is how to pay for it?  Many people choose to pay out of pocket, however, for many seniors requiring financial assistance, there are alternative payment methods available depending on the level and duration of care. Home care services like personal care and companionship are covered by long-term care insurance policies, Medicaid, VA benefits, and worker’s compensation. Premier Home Care is able to work with all of these programs in order to better fit and adapt to your financial needs. We also offer consultations to find out what services are available to you. Contact us to find out more open rates and hours. Private pay home care services do not require a doctor’s order.
